More about the processes

Edible oil processing - From oilseeds to edible oil

From harvesting the oilseeds to filling the finished oil, the product goes through numerous carefully controlled steps. Modern processing technologies have revolutionized efficiency and quality while preserving traditional methods.

Extracting oils from raw plant materials is a complex process that has been perfected. Modern oil mills combine traditional knowledge with innovative technology to produce high-quality products for a wide range of applications.

Oilseeds preparation - the foundation for quality

Oilseed preparation is the first crucial step in the processing process and lays the foundation for the quality of the end product. In this phase, the raw materials delivered are cleaned, foreign objects are removed and prepared for further processing.

Drying is an important step in preparation that reduces the moisture content of the oilseeds to an optimum level. Depending on the raw materials, fresh seeds can have too high a water content, which makes oil extraction (mechanical) more difficult and impairs quality.

Conditioning optimally prepares the cleaned and dried oilseeds for the subsequent processing steps. The seeds are heated to a certain temperature, which, among other things, loosens the cell structures and makes pressing easier.

Oilseedprocessing – The art of preparation

Oilseed treatment is a crucial intermediate step that prepares the cleaned seeds for the actual oil extraction (mechanical) process. This is where the efficiency and quality of the subsequent deoiling process is decided.

The first step in oilseed treatment usually consists of mechanical machining of the seeds. Different processes are used depending on the type of oilseed and the desired end product. For many seeds, the process begins with hulling. This not only improves the oil yield, but also increases the quality of the end product.

The seeds are then crushed to increase the surface area and break up the oil-containing cells.

Mechanical size reduction is usually followed by thermal treatment through conditioner, which ensures the optimum moisture and temperature of the seed for maximum oil yield.

Oilseeds processing - from raw materials to oil

Careful preparation and processing is followed by the actual oil extraction (mechanical) from the prepared seeds. Different processes are used depending on the desired end product and type of raw material.

In industrial production, continuous screw presses are usually used. The rotation of the screw transports and increasingly compresses the oilseeds, releasing the oil and producing press cake. This can be used as animal feed, fertilizer or for energy generation using biogas.

Advantages of modern edible oil processing

  • Higher efficiency and resource conservation: Modern processing plants achieve significantly higher yields while reducing energy and resource consumption.
  • Improved product quality and variety: Modern edible oil processing enables precise control of all process parameters and thus meets the highest quality standards.
  • Sustainability: Energy-efficient plants, optimized processes and the use of renewable energy help to reduce the carbon footprint.
