Animal by-product processing - ecological sustainability through recycling

Animal by-products such as fat, bones and proteins from meat production are reused in animal by-product processing. State-of-the-art technologies and strict regulations are used to convert these materials into high-quality ingredients.

HF Press+LipidTech supplies proven technology for processing biomass material. Reliability and efficiency are the core competencies of our products.

Carcass preparation -
The foundation for quality

Animal carcass & slaughter by-product processing begins with the delivery of raw materials, which are categorized upon acceptance within the EU:

  • Category 1: Material with highest risk - disposal.
  • Category 2: Material with risk of non-communicable diseases - not for feeding.
  • Category 3: Material that is generally no longer suitable for human consumption.

The delivered materials are then unloaded into collecting troughs, which enable hygienic interim storage of the materials and at the same time prevent contamination of the environment.

In a two-stage size reduction process, the animal body parts are first reduced to around 50 mm by a coarse crusher and then to around 25 mm by a fine crusher. This enables efficient further processing, after which the material passes through a metal separation system. Metallic impurities are removed from the material by means of inductive separation.

Carcass processing - The relevance of hygienization

The shredded material is subjected to a pressure sterilization process in steam-heated sterilizers. The material is thermally treated - bacteria, viruses and pathogens are inactivated under these conditions. This ensures hygienic safety during further processing.

Vapours are generated during sterilization. These vapors are fed into an air condenser, where they cool down and condense into water. The resulting condensate wastewater undergoes special wastewater treatment before it is discharged into wastewater treatment plants or disposed of elsewhere. In addition, the exhaust air from the condensers is routed to bioreactors for further cleaning. These biological filter systems reduce odour emissions and break down organic pollutants.

Carcass processing -
From raw materials to fat

After sterilization, the material is separated into its main components. In this process, meat, bones and fat are separated from each other. This is done using separation plants that work with different mechanical processes. Depending on the category of the raw material and the desired end products, the separated components are further processed in different ways:

  • Bones: Are further crushed and ground into bone meal, which can be used as fertilizer or, in certain cases, animal feed.
  • Fat: Is extracted and purified to make it usable for the production of soap, cosmetics or biodiesel.
  • Meat and offal: Are processed into animal feed or used for other industrial purposes.

Advantages of modern
Animal by-product processing

Modern animal by-product processing makes it possible to process up to a third of the by-products of meat production into materials and energy.

The recovered resources have a high economic value for a wide range of industries.

The process helps to reduce greenhouse gases and protects ground and surface waters from germs.
